Currently a member of Hampshire Scout Expeditions, but originally a Scout and then Venture Scout at 1st Bishops Waltham, Mathew has attended several international events including the 19th World Jamboree in Chile and Hampshire Extreme Venture in Switzerland. The award is only achieved by those aged 16 ? 25 who show the highest possible level of personal commitment, as well as extremely high standards of self-discipline and achievement in ?community service?, ?leadership?, ?activities and interests? and ?expeditions?. Mathew said: ?As part of the award and by volunteering as a ?Community Responder? in Bishops Waltham, I have been able to develop new skills both practically and interpersonally when responding to emergency incidents within my local community.?? ?The award has provided me with the opportunity to work towards nationally recognised qualifications including the Summer Mountain Leader Award and various first aid qualifications. The Summer Mountain Leader training has given me the confidence and skills necessary to operate safely in mountainous environments and through the young leader training provided by Hampshire Scout Expeditions I have been able to pass some of these new skills on to the younger members.? ?The highlight for me and definitely the most memorable part of the award was travelling to Peru to undertake an expedition in a remote and sometimes very challenging environment.? The main purpose of the expedition was to undertake a joint community development project just outside Cusco alongside members of the Peruvian Scout Association and local people.? This was then followed by a 6 day trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, which although one of the hardest things I?ve ever done was one of the most rewarding in terms of personal achievement.? ?As a Queen?s Scout it is a privilege to be chosen to attend the National Scout Service and St George?s Day Parade held at Windsor Castle on the Sunday nearest to St George?s Day and I am really looking forward to it.? Every Queen?s Scout receives a Royal certificate bearing this message from Her Majesty: ?As a Queen?s Scout you have prepared yourself for service to God and other people, and have shown yourself a worthy member of the world-wide Scout Movement, I wish you God-speed on your journey through life; may it prove for you a joyous adventure.? The standard of the Queen?s Scout Award is extremely high with choice only in the manner of attainment in order to suit the candidate?s interest and talents. Great personal effort, determination and self-discipline over a considerable period are needed and it may be justly claimed that this achievement is now harder than at any previous time.
