14th Eastleigh Scout Group improves its green credentials
By: Ian West - 22 February, 2010 (Last updated: 23 February, 2010)

Rainwater harvesting system installed
14th Eastleigh Scout Group improves its green credentials

The Group who have already installed energy efficiency measures, a solar hot water system, solar photovoltaic electrical system and their Community garden achieving Gold standard in Natural England’s Big wildlife garden, have now installed a rainwater harvesting system.

The system consists of four - 272 litre storage tanks which were especially manufactured to fit in the loft space.  The rainwater is collected from the headquarters roof, filtered and used to flush the toilets and urinals.

A typical roof can collect 500 – 800 litres a year per square meter of catchment which means collecting rainwater from just one side of the roof we can collect up to 99 cubic meters of water.  The Group could see a reduction of up to 50% of our mains water usage which is good for the environment as well as cutting our metered water bill.

The system was grant funded with support from Hampshire County Council, The Leslie Sell trust, The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation and BAA in the Community.
