Lord Lieutenant's Fund for Gold Expeditions

The Lord-Lieutenant’s Fund was established in 2006, as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Its primary objective is to provide grants to assist young people with the costs of travel to Wild Country areas for expeditions, and it is intended that the fund be drawn down over a ten year period. One-off grants of £50 per expedition are offered, and applications, using the official Application Form, are invited from any Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Unit or group operating in Hampshire.

It is recognised, however, that many young people do not complete their Award, despite having successfully undertaken the Expedition Section. In an attempt to encourage young people to see the Expedition in the wider context of the Award, <u>all the members of the group must have completed at least one other section of their Gold Award</u> before the venture. Although the Application Form only asks the Unit Leader to confirm that this is the case, documentary evidence (in the form of photocopies of the relevant pages of the young peoples’ Record Books) may be requested prior to release of the grant.

How the process works:

The process of obtaining a grant has been made as simple as possible:

  1. The normal arrangements for the venture are put in hand, including the necessary Wild Country and Operating Authority approvals.
  2. The grant application form is completed by an Award leader or participant and countersigned by the Unit Leader.
  3. Notification will be sent to confirm (or otherwise) the award of a £50 grant.
  4. The venture goes ahead as planned.
  5. The young people all sign a picture postcard, and post it to the Fund’s Administrator from a postbox in the area where the venture is taking place (An appropriate message may be included if desired!).
  6. On receipt of the postcard, the Administrator releases the grant to the address shown on the form. The Cheque will normally be made payable to the Unit.

Further points:

  • Although both training and assessed ventures take place in Wild Country areas, only ONE application from any group of young people will normally be approved in any calendar year.
  • The picture postcards may be used as publicity and promotional material for the Award.
  • Although grants are intended for Wild Country ventures, applications for ventures in other areas by groups with Special Needs will receive favourable consideration.
  • In the first year, it is intended to deal with applications on a “first come first served” basis. However if experience shows that demand is greater than the resources available, in future years the fund’s managers reserve the right to introduce some means of prioritising applications. This may be on the basis of need, or might take into account the number of other Sections of the Gold Award that have already been achieved.
